The great tribulation will end with the destruction of the remainder of Satan’s world at Armageddon, “the war of the great day of God the Almighty.”—Revelation 16:14, 16; 19:11-21.
The Watchtower Announcing Jehovah’s Kingdom. February 1, 1990 p. 21
This year, the April and May issues of The Watchtower will feature cover series on “Who Will Lead Mankind to Peace?” “World Peace—What Will It Really Mean?” “Millions Now Dead Will Live Again,” and “Armageddon—When?” Why not plan to share this information with your neighbors?
The Watchtower Announcing Jehovah’s Kingdom. March 1, 1990 p. 29
The Bible calls it “the war of the great day of God the Almighty,” or Armageddon. (Revelation 16:14, 16) Many think of Armageddon as a nuclear war that will destroy civilization.
The Watchtower Announcing Jehovah’s Kingdom. April 1, 1990 p. 9
First, Armageddon will remove all human obstacles to peace.
The Watchtower Announcing Jehovah’s Kingdom. April 1, 1990 p. 9
Second, at Armageddon this prophecy of Daniel will be fulfilled: “In the days of those kings the God of heaven will set up a kingdom that will never be brought to ruin.
The Watchtower Announcing Jehovah’s Kingdom. April 1, 1990 p. 9
When will Armageddon come?
The Watchtower Announcing Jehovah’s Kingdom. April 1, 1990 p. 9
Then, immediately after the sudden destruction that climaxes with Armageddon, the greatest obstacle to peace will be removed.
The Watchtower Announcing Jehovah’s Kingdom. April 1, 1990 p. 9
Soon the Kingdom will remove the seemingly stable human society Satan has built up (the earth), wiping out rebellious mankind (the sea) at Armageddon.—Revelation 11:17–12:12; 21:1
The Watchtower Announcing Jehovah’s Kingdom. April 1, 1990 p. 31
Adult Christians too can be disappointed, and this has in some cases led to spiritual disaster. Some set their hope on a date when they were sure Armageddon would come. When nothing happened on that day, they felt let down.

Armageddon-When?

Section Heading: Armageddon—When?
The Watchtower Announcing Jehovah’s Kingdom. May 15, 1990 p. 3
“WE STAND at Armageddon and we battle for the Lord.” With those words, former U.S. president Theodore Roosevelt applied the term “Armageddon” to a political battle in which he was involved. So, should we search for Armageddon in the political arena?
The Watchtower Announcing Jehovah’s Kingdom. May 15, 1990 p. 3
A few years ago, the Canadian magazine Business Life carried an article entitled “Economic Armageddon.” A subtitle asked: “Could Third World default on debt trigger our economic collapse?” But should we think of Armageddon as a financial disaster?
The Watchtower Announcing Jehovah’s Kingdom. May 15, 1990 p. 3
On that occasion, then U.S. president Ronald Reagan “was asked if he truly believes that the world is headed for a ‘nuclear Armageddon.’ Reagan acknowledged ‘philosophical discussions’ about the coincidence between current events and Biblical signs portending the last days, but the commander in chief insisted that he has never said that ‘we must plan according to Armageddon.’” Yet, should our search for the meaning of Armageddon focus on military action that threatens nuclear holocaust?
The Watchtower Announcing Jehovah’s Kingdom. May 15, 1990 p. 3
Many religious people say that Armageddon is a battle.
The Watchtower Announcing Jehovah’s Kingdom. May 15, 1990 p. 3
Searching for the meaning of Armageddon clearly raises some vital questions. What is Armageddon? If it is a battle, who will be the participants? Why will it be fought? Where will it take place? And when will Armageddon occur?
The Watchtower Announcing Jehovah’s Kingdom. May 15, 1990 p. 3
Section heading: What Is Armageddon?
The Watchtower Announcing Jehovah’s Kingdom. May 15, 1990 p. 4
The term “Armageddon” is derived from a word found in the Bible book of Revelation, known for symbolic language.
The Watchtower Announcing Jehovah’s Kingdom. May 15, 1990 p. 4
Armageddon, or Har–Magedon, is a transliteration of the Greek equivalent of the Hebrew expression Har Meghid·dohnʹ meaning “Mountain of Megiddo,” or “Mountain of Assembly of Troops.”
The Watchtower Announcing Jehovah’s Kingdom. May 15, 1990 p. 4
So Armageddon is not a political skirmish, an economic disaster, a nuclear holocaust, or a human conflict. Rather, Armageddon is God’s war.
The Watchtower Announcing Jehovah’s Kingdom. May 15, 1990 p. 4
On Jehovah’s side in the war of Armageddon is a vast army of invisible spirit forces led by the King Jesus Christ.
The Watchtower Announcing Jehovah’s Kingdom. May 15, 1990 p. 4
Huge invisible forces are available for the war of Armageddon.
The Watchtower Announcing Jehovah’s Kingdom. May 15, 1990 p. 5
Armageddon will be fought because God is righteous and will no longer tolerate evil. (Psalm 11:7)
The Watchtower Announcing Jehovah’s Kingdom. May 15, 1990 p. 5
Jehovah’s universal sovereignty will be upheld at Armageddon, and that war will clear his name of the reproach heaped upon it for centuries.
The Watchtower Announcing Jehovah’s Kingdom. May 15, 1990 p. 5
God’s war of Armageddon will actually prevent the destruction of all mankind.
The Watchtower Announcing Jehovah’s Kingdom. May 15, 1990 p. 5
What God does at Armageddon will be in complete harmony with his principal attributes of justice, wisdom, power, and love. (Deuteronomy 32:4; Job 12:13; Isaiah 40:26; 1 John 4:8)
The Watchtower Announcing Jehovah’s Kingdom. May 15, 1990 p. 5
Since the term “Armageddon” comes from a Hebrew expression meaning “Mountain of Megiddo,” some may conclude that this war will be fought on a lofty eminence bearing that name.
The Watchtower Announcing Jehovah’s Kingdom. May 15, 1990 p. 5
Associating Armageddon (or Har–Magedon) with that vicinity is apropos because it was the location of decisive battles.
The Watchtower Announcing Jehovah’s Kingdom. May 15, 1990 p. 5
Clearly, then, Armageddon will not be confined to some mountainous location in the Middle East. Rather, Armageddon (or Har–Magedon) is symbolic of a worldwide situation, although it draws some of its significance from Megiddo and what took place in that area.

Section heading: When Will Armageddon Occur?
The Watchtower Announcing Jehovah’s Kingdom. May 15, 1990 p. 6
Since Megiddo was in the land of God’s ancient people, what happens at Armageddon relates to Jehovah’s Witnesses in this “time of the end.” (Daniel 12:4)
The Watchtower Announcing Jehovah’s Kingdom. May 15, 1990 p. 6
Armageddon will occur when a certain situation develops that affects Jehovah’s Witnesses around the earth.
The Watchtower Announcing Jehovah’s Kingdom. May 15, 1990 p. 6
Thus, God’s mighty defense of his people can be called the battle, or war, of Armageddon. When Jehovah rises up to defend his servants against Gog’s attack, Armageddon will be in progress!
The Watchtower Announcing Jehovah’s Kingdom. May 15, 1990 p. 6
Any attempt to remain neutral in God’s war will cost you your life at Armageddon! And as so often proved Scripturally in this journal, the present generation will not pass away before Armageddon occurs!—Matthew 24:21, 34.

Section heading: What Armageddon Will Accomplish
The Watchtower Announcing Jehovah’s Kingdom. May 15, 1990 p. 7
Armageddon will remove the last vestige of Satan’s earthly organization. Moreover, the Devil and his demons will be abyssed. (Revelation 20:1-3) What blessings will then flow to Jehovah’s people, the joyful survivors of his great war of Armageddon!
The Watchtower Announcing Jehovah’s Kingdom. May 15, 1990 p. 7
Indeed, you may live to see the war of the great day of God the Almighty and become a happy survivor when Armageddon strikes!

But his closest friends jokingly called him Armageddon. Why? “We know he’s coming,” they would say, “but only God knows when!”
The Watchtower Announcing Jehovah’s Kingdom. June 15, 1990 p. 26
The Bible states: “As regards the wicked, they will be cut off from the very earth; and as for the treacherous, they will be torn away from it.” (Proverbs 2:22) This coming divine action the Bible calls Armageddon. (Revelation 16:16)

Like the anointed remnant, the great crowd of other sheep today appreciate that the only treasure that will survive the fiery battle of Armageddon and continue unsinged and unconsumed into the new world is this treasure of the blessed ministry, the service unto Jehovah God and his glorious King, Jesus Christ.
The Watchtower Announcing Jehovah’s Kingdom. July 15, 1990 p. 20
The Watch Tower commented: “This may be taken as an indication that some of the remnant will be on earth even after Armageddon is fought and will then have some more work to do in the name of the Lord and to his praise and glory.”

The fact that Jehovah did not bring Armageddon right after the ‘war in heaven’ enables multitudes to gain salvation, a great expression of divine loving-kindness.—Revelation 12:7-12; 2 Peter 3:15.
The Watchtower Announcing Jehovah’s Kingdom. September 15, 1990 p. 14
And what wonderful privileges lie before him at Armageddon and during his Millennial Reign, when Paradise will be restored to the earth and thousands of millions will be raised from the dead! (Luke 23:43)

Even back in 1918, the bride class began preaching a message that particularly involved those who might live on the earth. It was the public talk entitled “Millions Now Living May Never Die.” This offered a hope that many would survive Armageddon and thereafter gain eternal life on the Paradise earth under God’s Messianic Kingdom.
The Watchtower Announcing Jehovah’s Kingdom. December 15, 1990 p. 13
In 1923 the bride class understood that “the sheep” and “the goats” of Jesus’ parable at Matthew 25:31-46 are manifest prior to Armageddon.
The Watchtower Announcing Jehovah’s Kingdom. December 15, 1990 p. 13
It is a great comfort to Jehovah’s witnesses to now know that they are permitted to carry the waters of life to a class of people that may be taken through Armageddon and given everlasting life on the earth by reason of the bounteous goodness of Jehovah.”
The Watchtower Announcing Jehovah’s Kingdom. December 15, 1990 p. 13
They are told that they may now take their stand on the side of the Lord, and against the Devil, and receive a blessing. Is it not such a class of people that may now seek meekness and righteousness, and be hid in the day of his expressed wrath, and be carried beyond the great battle of Armageddon and live for ever and not die? (Zeph. 2:3)
